10 Things About Cindi

Hello all!  The lovely Cat has passed the Sugar Doll Blogger Award to me (Thank you Ms. Cat!) and so lets get this show started!

1. I am an only child.  I was born the year China implemented the one child law, so my parents had only lil' ole me.  Despite what you hear about only children being spoiled rotten, I might want to disagree in my case.  I grew up extremely poor and worked since I was 13 years old.  My parents never gave me an allowance and I've held all sorts of odd jobs through high school and college including waitressing, selling shoes, telemarketing, accounting assistant, adminstrative assistant, etc.

2. I'm unable to extend my right arm fully straight.  In 2nd grade I decided it'd be fun to balance on a tree trunk that was on it's side.  I slipped and probably half broke my right arm.  My parents didn't have insurance so I never went to the doctor but it healed fine.  The inability to extend is hardly noticeable though, probably due to my mom massaging it every night for me.

3. I'm a huge movie buff.  At one time I believe I have watched all the 100 movies on Netflix's top 100 list.  I used to go to the theater about once a week, but lately have gone less due to marriage and house planning.  My favorite movie of all time?  Life is Beautiful.  Least favorite movie of all time?  Perfume.

4. Three's Company is one of my favorite TV shows ever!  I mean, this show was ahead of its time and even Friends reference Three's Company on multiple episodes.  I still watch it from time to time and laugh my arse off.  This show was one of the first ones I watched after moving to the US and it was a tool for me to learn English at the time.  Being 8, I did not get the sexual innuedos until re-watching it in my grown-up years though!  Haha!

5. I love singing my heart out but what's unique is that I can sing Korean, Japanese, and Cantonese songs even though I don't speak the languages.  (Cantonese is Chinese but I speak Mandarin.)  I've went Karaoke with people that speak these languages and they say when I sing, there is absolutely no accent.  I'm quite proud of that!  :)

6. I used to weigh about 40 pounds more than I do now in high school.  At my highest weight, I was a size 14 and for my height, also for my family history, that was not normal.  In college I lost a great amount of weight, unhealthily, and was a size 2.  It wasn't until I turned 30 that I finally was truly comfortable with my body and now maintain a steady size 6.  I try to eat well (I don't deprive myself of certain indulgences) and I exercise regularly.

7. I have a secret crush on Zac Efron.  I know, he's the High School Musical guy.  But I actually think he's an extremely talented and funny actor.  If anyone hasn't seen 17 Again yet, I urge you to rent it on a Friday night.  It's hilarious and that's the movie that made me fall for him.  :)

8. I pride in my ability to keep in touch with distant friends.  I'm extremely good at returning email and making sure that I stay in communication with people I truly cared about that's moved on.  My best friend and I met in the 4th grade and I moved away in the 6th grade.  Now, 20 something years later we still email on a daily basis.  Prior to the existence of email, we wrote pages of letters to each other.  In fact, I owe her a reply to an email she wrote yesterday, which I'm going to write after this blog.  Hehe.

9. I once stole a cat!  It's quite interesting actually.  In 3rd grade while playing outside of our apartment, I heard a cat meowing at me on an apartment balconey.  I walked up and took it home!  I fed it and kept it.  A few months later, my friend and I met a young couple that were animal lovers and we'd often go over to play with their animals.  I told them I had a cat and described how Cookie looked.  The guy at the time said, "Well, that sounds like our Toby, the cat we lost."  Clueless, I said "Oh a lot of cats look like that."  Fast forward a year or so later, my parents and I were moving to a bigger apartment that didn't allow pets, I asked the couple if they'd like to adopt my cat.  Their response, "Sure, we'd love to have Toby back!"  What a great couple they are, to be so nice to an oblivious kid who loved furry things.  :)

10. I am completely obsessed with turbo kickboxing.  I go at least four times a week and literally don't want the one hour session to end.  I secretly wish to be an instructor one day, but for now, I'm just trying to work on form.

Well, that's it everyone.  A little glimpse of who I am.  I hope everyone enjoyed getting to know me a little bit, and I swear I don't steal other people's furry kittens anymore.  :)

Have a wonderful Tuesday!

  2. I loved reading this post about you! I am a big movie junkie myself, thanks to the Block Buster and Netflix membership cards heh. I also love to sing. It's so great that you can sing in different languages. I started learning Spanish when I was in middle school, and stuck with it until my second year in college. I can speak Cantonese and some mandarin, but not fluent in either 0_o...

  3. Hey Cindi! (Don't be creeped out that I'm commenting right after you posted. I'm not a stalker, haha...I just always check into the blogging world right before I leave work)

Thanks so much for sharing these tidbits and stories with us! I really admire your ability to stay in touch with friends. I moved a lot when I was younger, and am really terrible about keeping in touch. You've inspired me to try to get back in touch with some friends -- and keep in touch this time!

  4. I laughed outloud when I saw that Perfume is your least favorite movie. I watched it because Alan Rickman is in it and then at the end was like WTF? What a weird horrible movie it is!

  5. I have a secret crush on Zac Efffron too. Well I guess it's not a secret anymore. I loved 17 Again. Such a great movie.

  6. These are such neat facts, Cindi!! Thanks so much for sharing! That is such a sweet story about the cat & the couple :)

  7. Pamela - To control the population, the government said any couple living in a metropolitan city can only have one child. If you're in the rural areas, you can only have a second kid if your first one was a girl. It's now been lifted though but still to this day, many couples only have one because they can't afford more.

Sydney - I'd love to sing in Spanish! I think it's such a great language and of course, the guys are hot too! :)

Jamie - Haha! I oftentimes catch bloggers that just posted and think, "hmmm maybe this is weird that I'm constantly refreshing my dashboard". :) I'm glad I can inspire you!

Kathleen - HAHA...I was afraid no one would know what I mean. Right? Isn't it the weirdest ending ever??? Where'd he go? Was he eaten? And an orgy???? Are you freakin' kidding me?

Lorraine - I loved Zac's reaction when his daughter tried to kiss him. Haha that was classic!

  8. Erin - Thanks! I loved your facts too. This is fun! Haha. I thought the cat thing was so funny. I never realized what I was doing was wrong. And to not acknowledge that I've taken the couple's cat...oy! Haha.

  9. Aw, thanks for sharing tidbits about yourself. I always find those so interesting. Item #9 cracked me up! At least the kitty was loved all over.

I bet you can write Chinese, can't you? I moved over from Taiwan when I was 3 and suffered through a few Chinese summer camps during elementary school, but all I can do is pretty much write my name. Hang my head in shame, I know.

  10. That's funny about 17 Again...I was not a Zac Efron fan and thought that movie would be so lame... but I thought he was HOT in it, and the movie was actually good!

I really liked learning about you!

  11. Great info! I also loved that movie 17 Again and think Zac Efron is cute. At my age, it makes me feel like a cougar. LOL!

  12. Lisa - Unfortunately I can't write much Chinese. And when I try, it literally looks like a second grader wrote it. I can read though, due to the countless Taiwanese soaps I used to watch as a kid, so I picked up on some reading. Funny though cause I can read it, but can't write it.

Robin - I know! I was amazingly surprised by the movie. I loved how Matthew Perry still acted like Chandler...so I'm sure Zac Efron had to act like Chandler to make it work!

Liz - HA! I'd be a cougar too then. But hey, I don't mind it...cause my Fiance is 4 years younge than me. Makes me a mini cougar!

  13. Amazing how much we have in common. I'm so jealous of your Karaoke skills! We must hang out next time I'm in Seattle!

  14. Cat - Don't tell me you stole a cat too? And that's why you're name is Cat! Haha! I'd LOVE to meet up the next time you're in Seattle. I would love to take a trip with you to the Uvillage Anthro, then stop and grab a cup of coffee (or tea since I know not everyone is Seattle coffee crazy). Let me know the next time you're in town!

  15. The only thing I don't like about 17 Again is that we're expected to believe that hottie Zac Efron turns into non-hottie Matthew Perry as an adult! Totally unbelievable! ;)

  16. Cindi - I didn't see an email for you, but I wanted to let you know that I picked up a sapphire acting out skirt for you. They were marked down to $19.95 and there was only one size 6. It does fit a tad slimmer than our gray ones. If you're interested, shoot me an email with your address (anthrosdottir(at)gmail(dot)com. Consider it an early wedding gift!

  17. sorry, that's email "address". I must be the reigning queen of typos!

  18. Cindi, you're a big cutie! I loved getting to know you better and we have something in common because I'm also an only child, and spent my early years in a communist country!! As for Zac Efron, I must admit he's a big hottie but I feel too silly admitting it since he's so young!

  19. This was fun to read! I also think Zac is pretty cute. Have you seen him in Hairspray? I didn't realize it was him at first because his hair looks different!

  20. Cindi, I absolutley LOVE this! The cat story is freaking hilarious and adorable! At least you weren't some Elmira-type child (you know, the one from Tiny Toons?)! And I'm so proud of you for overcoming your weight issues. I'm a huge fan of The Biggest Loser - I love how they teach people to lose weight and maintain in a healthy manner. I've never struggled with weight myself, but the older I get, the more I do have to watch what goes into my body and the amount of activity and exercise I do. I use that show and people like you as a motivation to get moving! :) I would really like to try kickboxing - it seems like it'd be an amazing workout and fun too!

  21. Cat - OMG you are SOOO great!!! I emailed you my address so let me know if you don't receive it. I can't believe that skirt went on sale!!!! I'm so giddy and excited right now. Thank you thank you thank you!

Robin - Haha you are totally right! Matthew Perry has definitely lost the little luster that he did have. I never found him cute or sexy...but I loved him on Friends.

Dea - Ooh you're an only child too? I definitely think we're both lucky enough to have grown up in the US and enjoy the opportunities it has to give us. Besides, if we were back in our countries, we won't get to enjoy Anthro!

Debbie - Yep...have seen Hairspray! I loved him in it as well. I thought the movie was cute overall but 17 again is probably my favorite movie of his!

Aimee - I watch The Biggest Loser too and am so saddened when they fall off the wagon after they get home. You are so lucky to not have a weight issue, but then again, you're probably a natural healthy eater. Haha. It wasn't until recently that I started studying food and paying attention to what goes into my body.

  22. Oh girl, you have no idea. I am definitely NOT a healthy eater. Oh my goodness. I'm mostly good about portions, but I love McDonalds fries more than anyone on this planet! I have had to watch it a bit more now that I have children to set an example for. Growing up I had a crazy fast metabolism, but it's slowed a lot and if I didn't do portion control I'd probably be in trouble.

  23. Love the things you are sharing with us. We actually have a lot in common. I am an only child born in China too and had to work hard on a lot of jobs too as a new immigrant. I am older than you are because I am born before the 1 child policy. (showing my age here, haha)

My weirdest job is selling knifes to family and friends and the families and friend they know. I hated that job. You know how Chinese are. One cleaver does all the job. Who needs the pairing knife, bread knife, this and that knife? Therefore I was never able to sell much.

Thanks for stopping by my blog today. I will have to think about what I want to share now.

  24. I think this is one of the best facts posts I've read in a while! So entertaining and I felt like I learned so much about you :) And oh my gosh, watching Three's Company now that I'm older? I have to say that I'm *shocked* at all the raunchiness that was going on that I totally missed as a kid! I totally used to watch that show with my parents all the time, but most of it was going right over my head too!

  25. I loved reading this post! You are so cute! I actually have a secret crush on the actor that plays Jacob in the Twilight series....shhhh! I mean look at all those muscles...that guy is HOT!

I also used to struggle with my weight. In h.s. I was about 25 lbs heavier and didn't finally lose the weight and keep it off until about 6 years ago. Running has really helped me to stay on track...but I say I run to eat! I will always have a little junk in the trunk but I prefer to live a little than to be super skinny! I think you look gorgeous and cannot wait to see wedding pictures!!!
