Nothing evokes more emotion than a song, don't you agree? One of the hardest things for me to decide on was appropriate songs for our wedding. Specifically, the father/daughter, mother/son dance song. Chris and I are not doing separate dances, we're going to do our parents' dances together, so we needed a song that was just right for the both of us.
Speaking of the father/daughter dance though, I'm pretty nervous about it. My dad and I have never hugged in our lives. NEVER! Growing up, it was just never in our culture to give physical affection. When he's proud of me, the most he'd do was pat me on the back and say, "Good job!". I don't find this weird at all, and don't mind that we've never had much interaction because he's shown me in many other ways how much he loves me, but the dance will be interesting. We will need to practice for sure!
Anyway, both Chris and I have a really wide range of interest when it comes to music. We love all types of music and own probably thousands of songs in our itunes repository. I first started listening to Jim Brickman when I was in college. My friend, Malena introduced me to his albums and I fell in love with his song collaborations with different artists. I know some may think his songs are cheesy and overdone for weddings, but one of his songs specifically spoke to me. And when Lady Antebellum became popular in the last year, I realized this song I've loved for years, was sung by Lady's leading lady!
Never Alone
Jim Brickman and Lady Antebellum
May the angels protect you
Trouble neglect you,
And heaven accept you,
When it's time to go home
May you always have plenty,
Your glass never empty
Know in your belly
You're never alone.
May your tears come from laughing
Your fine friends worth having
With every year passing
They mean more than gold
May you win but stay humble
Smile more than grumble
And know when you stumble
You're never alone
Never alone
Never alone
I'll be in every beat of your Heart when you face the unknown
Wherever you fly
This isn't goodbye.
My love will follow you
Stay with you
Baby, you're never alone
Well, I have to be honest
As much as I wanted
I'm not gonna promise
The cold winds won't blow
So when hard times have found you,
And your fears surround you
Wrap my love around you
You're never alone
May the angels protect you
Trouble neglect you
And heaven accept you
When it's time to go home,
And when hard times have found you,
And your fears surround you
Wrap my love around you
You're never alone.
My love will follow you
Stay with you
Baby, you're never alone
Parents, regardless if they're physically here with us or not, will always have a presence in our lives. We were created from them, and they will always be apart of us. The lyrics of this song spoke to me, not only because it sounded like life lessons my Dad would say to his little girl, but because I know no matter what happens, I will never be alone. Here's to my eyes staying dry during our dance!

Oh, I can't stand it! Hahaha, these father-daughter, mother-son dances are horrible in a totally different way since I had my kids. I inevitable stand there desperately wiping away tears that I hope no one sees when I'm at a wedding and these dances are taking place.
ReplyDeleteGood luck!

ReplyDeleteCarol - I'm sure if I had kids, I'd do the same thing. I already cry at weddings right now and I don't even have little ones.
ReplyDeleteI haven't been to a wedding in a while, but I'm so sure those father/daughter - mother/son dances would get the best of me too. Ugh! I cannot even stand to think about my kids being old enough for that. :*( That song is so perfect, Cindi! I got chills reading the lyrics. I'm sure the dance with your Dad will be fine - even if you don't practice. Growing up, my dad was the same way as yours, but when my sister and I were both in college he started making a point to say "I love you" and hug us. It was a little awkward at first, but I'm so used to it now and can't belive it ever was weird.
ReplyDeleteWe're doing our parent dances together too. We're using What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong. What song are you using for your first dance?
ReplyDeleteAimee - Haha, my dad has never said he loves me either. I'm sure to some, this is a weird thing. But we're closer than a lot of father/daughters out there. I can't go 2 days without talking to my parents.
ReplyDeleteSara - Aww..how sweet! I think that's a perfect song. For our first dance, we're using a song called "That's How I Know" by a Canadian boy band no other. HAHA! They're called B4-4. I know I know, but it's a really good song. Also, not a lot of people have heard of it, and there's also a nice little story behind it. I'll blog about it soon as well. :) Also, GOOD LUCK and HAVE FUN at your wedding!
This is a great song! You have to go with what speaks to you regardless of anything else. Aww... everytime I read your posts I get all sentimental. You're so sweet when you talk about your family.
ReplyDeletewe are skipping the dance tradition all together, I'm kind of sad about it, but given the circumstances, we just decided it wasn't fitting given our venue etc. My dad is extremely shy and my fiance is extremely awkward about a first dance and well.. I just threw my hands up in the air and said I give up. I think the song you picked is super sweet and even though your dad doesn't say he loves you , sometimes parents (and friends and extended family) have other ways of showing it and that's what counts :)
ReplyDeleteby the way, as of late, all things wedding related whether on tv, as a discussion or even thinking about it makes me almost cry. How am I ever going to survive?
